About Riverwest Yogashala

Around the Corner with John McGivern interview wtih Yvette Murrell. Yvette discusses the Yogashala's mission with John McGiven.

Our Mission
Riverwest Yogashala, a nonprofit yoga center, brings yoga to a diverse population, promoting strength, clarity, and overall well-being through the practice of Iyengar yoga.

What Makes Us Unique?

In addition to weekly classes for all levels, we provide free classes each month, scholarships for low-income students, classes for underserved populations, study groups, open practice sessions, and more. As the only nonprofit Iyengar yoga center in our region, we provide excellent instruction from certified Iyengar yoga teachers, and we are committed to keeping our fees affordable to the widest possible population.

The Iyengar Method of Yoga
Our teaching is inspired by the work of master teacher, BKS Iyengar of Pune, India. Through intense practice and over 65 years of teaching, Iyengar has developed a sophisticated and internationally respected system of bringing the ancient art of yoga to contemporary practitioners.

Among the innovations Iyengar established are:
1) standing poses to develop strength, stability, stamina, concentration, and precise body alignment, 2) use of props to receive maximum benefit from each pose safely, 3) use of yoga for therapeutic benefits.

The Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (www.iynaus.org) oversees a rigorous and comprehensive certification program. Certified IYNAUS teachers undergo years of extensive training which progresses through 14 levels. As BKS Iyengar articulates, "Teaching is not merely teaching to earn your livelihood. Teaching is learning also–learning to refine your body, nerves, intelligence and self, so that you can refine those who come to you."
